4 Ways to Prepare Your Roof for the Cold Months

Fall is arguably the best time to do any home improvement project, and it’s also your last chance to ready your roof for the winter. Superior Roofing discusses four ways you can ready your home’s roofing system once the cold season begins.

1. Get Some Much-Needed Roof Repair

Now is the best time to have some repair work done on your home’s roofing system. By the end of summer, your roof has experienced every kind of inclement weather from spring showers and storms to the searing heat of summer. Performing some much-needed roof repair now also addresses small problems like leaks, which can quickly become a real home risk during fall.

2. Check Your Insulation

The insulation in your attic does more than just heat your home; it also keeps your roofing structure healthy. Lack of proper insulation during winter will cause your roof to dry up and suffer structural damage, not to mention force you to spend more on artificially heating your home.

3. Clean and Unclog Your Gutters

As your local roofer, we recommend having us clean and unclog your gutters before winter starts. Leaves and debris clogging your gutters are dangerous as it will cause water to pool on your roof, which can damage the roof’s fascia. A clogged gutter also causes mold to develop, which can pose a health risk for those allergic to it.

4. Replace an Old Roof ASAP

If your roof is already beyond its maximum life span, then we highly recommend getting it replaced instead of repaired. For asphalt shingles, any repair work done will cost as much as a full replacement once it goes over 25 years. It’s better that you install a brand new one that you’re sure will protect your home throughout the winter months.
