Common Roof Problem Areas That Need Regular Roof Inspections

A roofing system can suffer a multitude of issues with common roof component problems. Keep your roof in as good a shape as can be with regular inspections of these trouble areas. If you cannot inspect them yourself, make sure to contact your professional roofing contractor.

Fascia

Fascia is the wooden or metal band running across and under a roof edge. It connects to the ends of rafters, trusses and the area where the gutter attaches to the roof. It acts as a barrier between the edge of the roof and the elements of the outdoors – especially water. It also protects the interior of your building from water damage. Look for signs of rot or damage caused by moisture in your fascia.

Soffit

Soffit is the surface beneath the overhanging section of a roof eave or below the fascia and rafters. Vented soffit circulates air to the vents and draws heat and moisture away from the house. It helps to ventilate the attic and prevent rot in the sheathing and rafters. It helps regulate the temperature in your attic and through the rest of your home. Look for cracks, holes and rot that let water, insects and small animals through and lead to roof repair.

Flashings

Flashings seal roof edges, perimeters, penetrations, walls, valleys, drains and interrupted roof coverings. Its primary function is to seal any voids in the roof system where water may enter and cause leaks. Weather and oxidation deteriorate flashing and make it come loose.

Gutters

Gutters keep water from your building’s foundation and protect its structural integrity. Gutters are very susceptible to water and debris buildup causing mold and mildew. Gutters and downspouts can get so backed up with debris they become useless. In a roof replacement, be sure your gutters are well-leveled toward the downspouts. It will ensure that water flows away from your house.
