Once you’ve signed with a roofing contractor, picked your roofing options and locked in an installation date, all that’s left for you to do is wait for the big day. But don’t relax just yet — you have to make sure your home is just as ready as you are. In today’s post, local roofing company Superior Roofing shares a quick guide to preparing your home for a roof installation.

Why Do You Need To Prepare Your Home?
While it is possible for roofers to install a roof on an unprepared home, it can hinder what would otherwise be a smooth process. Roof installation tends to generate a lot of dust and debris that can get anywhere. There is also the risk of damage to property if items of value were left in the open. While reputable roofers like us are insured for accidental property damage, not needing it would be much more preferable.
How To Prepare Your Home
Your roofer will need several days — even weeks, during busy seasons — to order roofing materials and pull permits, which means you’ll have ample time to get your home ready.
- Clear your yard. Most of the installation work will be done outdoors, so you have to make sure that your yard is ready. Clear as much space as you can, as it will function as the staging area for materials and equipment. Anything that isn’t nailed down should be stored, from scattered toys to yard lighting. You can also install temporary protection for the sensitive parts of your landscaping.
- Install dust covers and plastic sheeting. As we’ve mentioned above, roofing work will generate a lot of dust that can get anywhere. Take the time to install dust covers and place them over furniture, electronics and other valuable items. Plastic sheeting can also help isolate the work areas, which is particularly important if your project involves rebuilding the roof frame.
- Make arrangements for your kids and pets. Noise, dust and the presence of strangers can be upsetting for kids and pets. Make arrangements to have them stay with relatives, or book a hotel room for the duration of the project. If the same options are not available for your pets, they can be temporarily rehomed at a pet kennel.
