What Are the Common Causes of Roof Sagging?

If your roofline is starting to take the shape of a saddle, there is a high chance you have a case of a sagging roof. Here, we talk about the common causes of roof sagging and how to deal with it.

Why Do Roofs Sag?

In most cases, roofs sag because there is too much load and not enough structural support. Common loads include powerful winds, snow and ice buildup, and too many layers of roofing materials. A sagging roof can come in different forms. A ridge that sinks in the middle, for instance, is likely due to undersized rafters or poor internal bracing. If a roof dips in between the trusses or rafters, it is probably due to a sheathing that is too thin. Old age, damage to the roof’s structural components and other environmental factors can also cause roofs to droop.

What Can You Do About It?

There are a number of ways to address sagging in traditional rafter-style roofing frames. Most times, a roofing contractor will reinforce the framing internally. But if the roofing material is in need of a replacement anyway, it may be best to completely tear off the old decking and put in place larger-sized rafters while the framing is exposed. With truss-style roof frames, issues with the decking can be resolved as mentioned, although widespread sagging related to the framing should be taken up with the builder of the home. Any modifications to the original construction of the roof should be examined thoroughly before proceeding with the work.
