What Makes PVC a Great Material for Flat Roofs?

When it comes to flat roofing systems, there’s a plethora of different materials. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of them, and it’s widely considered a great, all-round material for both residential and commercial properties. But what exactly makes this single-ply membrane so great?

Durable Roofing

PVC differs from other flat roofing materials because its seams are hot-air welded. To compare, other membrane roofing requires adhesives, tapes and caulk when installed on a roof. The hot-air welded seams make the roof strong, durable and virtually impermeable to moisture damage and intrusion.

On top of that, the seams form a watertight bond that’s stronger than the PVC material itself. The sheer durability of this flat roofing material is one of the reasons why it’s very popular for roof replacement and new installation.

Chemical Resistance

PVC is the premiere roofing material for commercial properties due to its high resistance to chemicals, which are often found in industrial cleaning agents or toxic materials. The same resistance also means it’s easier to clean since it can easily shrug off natural (and less harmful) chemical processes.

A Long Service Life

PVC roofs have a modest service life of 20 years, which is comparable to higher-grade asphalt and other roofing membranes. That said, the combination of superior durability, chemical resistance and innate wind and fire resistance means that a PVC roof can easily go beyond its expected service life – with some even reaching up to 30 years or more. The fact that it requires little maintenance and upkeep makes it a very attractive roofing material for many property owners.

These are some of the key features that make PVC roofs a great choice. From roof repair to new installation, Superior Roofing is ready to assist you with your next roofing project.
