Common Causes of Asphalt Shingle Blistering

Blistering can happen in asphalt shingles even if they are properly manufactured. In general, asphalt shingle blisters are no cause for concern as long as they haven’t popped or resulted in bald patches on your roof. But once the blisters pop and the shingle granules get dislodged, this leaves your roofing system exposed to outdoor elements. Significant granule loss can also affect your roof’s capacity to protect your home against harsh weather.

What Causes Asphalt Shingle Blisters?

Trapped Moisture

During manufacturing, moisture can get trapped inside the asphalt shingles. And once they have been finally installed and the sun’s heat starts beating upon them, this could cause the trapped moisture to form bubble-like marks on the shingles.

Excessive Heat in the Attic

The temperature in your attic can become too warm if the space is not properly ventilated. Due to the excessive heat, blisters can form on your asphalt shingles and possibly pop over time.

How Can You Keep Shingle Blisters From Popping?

If you notice blisters on your asphalt shingles, make sure to check the condition of your roofing regularly. Your roofing company should be able to tell if the blisters have popped.

There are a few things you can do to prevent shingle blisters from popping. Here are some of them:

  • Avoid walking on blistered shingles. Foot traffic can cause blisters to pop.
  • Trim nearby trees. Branches and other debris from surrounding trees can cause the blisters to pop when they poke or fall on your roof.
  • Replace your shingles. Once the blisters have popped, there’s no way to restore the shingles. As a precaution, you can choose to replace blistered shingles before they pop so that you can avoid the risk of leaks and water damage.
